SOUTH DIVISION

Atlanta Soul

EST. 2018

Atlanta Soul formed in 2018 as one of the first six semi-professional Ultimate teams entirely for women and gender expansive players. Today, Atlanta Soul's core values related to competition are Build Competitive Capacity and Mobilize Experience to Win. Our three core values related to equity are Foster Emerging Talent, Eliminate Gatekeepers, and Raise Awareness.

As a collective, we take up the difficult work of being a semi-professional sports team with a social justice mission. While we showcase women, transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, and genderfluid people in high-quality Ultimate, we use our platform to also share knowledge and create spaces for conversation. We work to influence individual-level awareness that will reverberate into our communities, and back into our city and our sport in the future. We bring players from the Southeast Ultimate community into a flat organization, dedicated to anti-oppression, that is constantly listening and improving. We link rising stars with a team that will include and empower them to grow both as players and as people. We provide a stage for our team, and youth who we hope will be on the team one day, to play in front of supportive fans.

WE'RE NOT ONLY FIGHTING FOR VISIBILITY AND SUPPORT OF WOMEN AND NON-BINARY PEOPLE WHO CURRENTLY PLAY ULTIMATE AT A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE LEVEL, BUT ALSO FOR ACCESS AND INCLUSION OF PEOPLE WITH RACE AND CLASS IDENTITIES THAT ARE UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE SPORT.

This is work that we do for our souls - the work of committing to liberation and justice within the misogynist realm of sports, and the environment of racial capitalism, that bred the inequity present in the sport of Ultimate. We view this commitment as our way of staying true to the city we represent, a city synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement and where people continue today to bring about equity in the face of injustice.
